Design Meets Innovation: Shaping the Work Shoes of Tomorrow Together with the German Shoe Technical School
What will the work shoe of the future look like?
With this question, ABEBA launched a joint design project with the German Shoe Technical School in Pirmasens at the beginning of the year. The goal was to give young designers the opportunity to contribute their ideas and expertise to a real-world development project—while also gaining new perspectives on the work shoes of tomorrow.
A project with real-world relevance
The collaboration focused on developing innovative footwear concepts for the healthcare sector. The goal was to combine functionality, comfort, and modern design—always with an eye toward the people who wear their work shoes day in and day out.
Following the joint kick-off meeting, the students have been developing their ideas over the past few months. From initial sketches to material and color concepts and on to detailed designs, they created unique solutions featuring a wide variety of approaches.
Creative ideas and impressive concepts
At the end of June, our team once again visited the German School of Footwear Design. As part of their final presentations, the students personally presented their completed concepts and designs.
We were particularly impressed by the variety of ideas. Each design offered its own interpretation of what modern work shoes will look like in the future and what requirements they must meet. This clearly demonstrated just how much creativity, expertise, and passion went into the projects.
In addition to the presentations, the event also provided ample opportunity for personal interaction between the students, the faculty, and our product management team. It is precisely this dialogue that makes such collaborations so valuable: it bridges the gap between education and industry and provides new impetus for future product development.
Shaping the Future Together
For ABEBA, collaborating with educational institutions is an important part of our innovation efforts. Young talents bring new perspectives, fresh ideas, and creative solutions—and at the same time, they have the opportunity to participate in a hands-on project with a leading manufacturer of work shoes.
Such partnerships create added value for both sides and demonstrate how collaboration can lead to innovation.
Outlook: Awards Ceremony in September
However, the project does not end with the final presentation. In September, the best concepts will be honored at a festive awards ceremony at our headquarters in St. Ingbert.
Together with ABEBA’s students, faculty, and staff, the top three finishers will be awarded prizes, and the winners will be honored for their outstanding achievements.
We are already looking forward to welcoming the young designers back and successfully completing the project together.
